Glossary of Organizations Mentioned in This Book

Ad Hoc Committee of Concerned JCCA Members – a short-lived committee, chaired by George Kadota, that sprang up in 1986 to try to get the Toronto JCCA to hold an annual general meeting.

Association of Japanese Canadians in Japan (AJCJ) – an organization aimed at establishing communication links among Canadians of Japanese ancestry currently residing in Japan.

B.C. Security Commission – the office commissioned by the Government of Canada to administer the expulsion and relocation of Japanese Canadians.

Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) – an organization to combat racism, funded by the NAJC and the federal government as part of the Redress Agreement.

Concerned Nisei and Sansei – a loosely named group of former Toronto JCCA members concerned with the legal status of the Toronto JCCA. They began meeting in early 1984. The nucleus of this group formed the North York Chapter of the NAJC.

Co-operative Committee on Japanese Canadians (CCJC) – an ad hoc advocacy group started by Rev. James Finlay in Toronto in the early 1940s to lobby against the “repatriation” of Japanese Canadians.

Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) – only national Japanese American organization representing the community at large.

Japanese Canadian Centennial Project Redress Committee (JCCP RC) – a Vancouver-based offshoot of the 1977 Japanese Canadian Centennial committed to exploring the question of fair Redress.

Japanese Canadian Citizens for Democracy (JCCD) – the first Japanese Canadian community organization in Toronto, formed in 1943 to assist the relocees.

Japanese Canadian Citizens League (JCCL) – the pre-war Japanese Canadian organization formed in Vancouver, B.C.

Japanese Canadian National Redress Association of Survivors (JCNRAS) – a group formed in early 1985 in Toronto by G. Imai and J. Oki to oppose the NAJC on the Redress issue. Also referred to as “Japanese Canadian National Redress Committee of Survivors”, it advocated a symbolic group compensation package only.

Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation (JCRF) – a foundation established as a result of the Redress Settlement of 1988 to administer and distribute a community fund that began at $12 million.

Japanese Canadian Redress Secretariat (JCRS) – a federal government office that was set up in 1988 to administer the distribution of Redress funds to individuals.

Mass Evacuation Group – a movement that emerged by the spring of 1942 to oppose the splitting up of families during the expulsion.

National Association of Japanese Canadians – an umbrella organization for Japanese Canadians with representatives from all the major centres across Canada. Formerly NJCCA.

NAJC, North York Chapter – interim organization to support he NAJC in Toronto. At the time of its formation, the Toronto JCCA was still the official representative of Toronto area Japanese Canadians in the NAJC.

NAJC, Greater Toronto Chapter – the organization (formerly NAJC, North York Chapter) finally recognized as the group representing Toronto in the NAJC.

National Council for Japanese American Redress (NCJAR) – a Japanese American group organized to sue the American government in the courts in order to gain Redress.

National Japanese Canadian Citizens Association (NJCCA) – the first nation-wide organization uniting Japanese Canadians, founded in 1947.

National Redress Committee (NRC) – a national subcommittee of NAJC Council mandated to research the subject of Redress and make recommendations to the parent body.

Sodan Kai – a “discussion group” started by young Japanese Canadian lawyers in 1983 to explore the various Redress options and stimulate community discussion on the subject.

Toronto JCCA Redress Committee – Toronto area committee on Redress formed in November 1983 with representation from a wide range of Japanese Canadian organizations and institutions.
