Sharon Kiyomi Yamashita is a sansei, born in Montreal who moved to Burlington, following the introduction of the French language law in 1977. Raised in the post-Japanese Canadian incarceration era, she did not identify with her Japanese heritage until late adulthood. Her recent involvement with the NAJC human rights committee (HRC) has given her insight into her personal journey with anti-Asian discrimination. She was actively involved at the recent Human Rights Symposium as a NAJC HRC member and as a Toronto NAJC volunteer.

She hopes to continue working to promote social justice and human rights. Sharon has volunteered with many organizations including Bayview United Church (formerly Centennial-Japanese United Church), Girl Guides of Canada, adult literacy programs and community fundraising events.
