Mika Fukuma
Mika Fukuma was born and raised in Toronto, and speaks English and Japanese. Her interest in Japanese Canadian history led to history studies in university. She worked for the Nikkei Voice, a national newspaper from 2005 to 2012. During those years she was able to further her interest in the community and history as she travelled to Japanese Canadian communities across Canada. She has been involved with the Toronto Fukuoka Kenjinkai since 2004 and is now co-vice-president.
Recently she wrote the text for the signage erected at Mount Robson, B.C., on the Yellowhead-Blue River road camps where Japanese Canadian men were sent during the Second World War. She is also working with the NAJC on a website with a focus on three Japanese Canadian road camp projects in B.C. She hopes to further develop and support her interest in the Japanese Canadian community by working with the Toronto NAJC.
