Hana Hasegawa
LinkedInHana Hasegawa is of Japanese, British and Irish ancestry, born in Edmonton and raised in Toronto. As a child, she spent two years living in Osaka, which helped connect her with her family in Japan, especially her Ojiichan and Obaachan in Gifu Prefecture.
Hana has a BA in sociology and a MA in gender, feminist and women’s studies from York University. Her research focused on postwar and more recent Japanese immigrants and their descendants’ connection to the history of the incarceration during the Second World War as people who did not experience the injustices, but whose own experiences of racism point to the historical continuum of anti-Asian racism in Canada. Her MA at York has helped foster a passion for feminist and antiracist work and politics, which she hopes to carry over in her involvement with the youth council in addition to connecting with younger and older generations of Japanese Canadians.
