Screening and Panel Discussion at the JCCC

Saturday, January 27, 2024

2 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Yonsei filmmaker, Meredith Hama-Brown’s feature film and directorial debut won the International Film Critic’s Award at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall and made the Globe and Mail’s Top Ten Canadian Film List for 2023. The film tackles complex family and relationship issues that arise as the main character, a sansei, grieves the death of her mother. Underpinning her loss is a search for identity in the fissures of memory, which includes the impact of internment on her mother. Her white husband is at a loss and retreats into anger as their marriage unravels and affects their two daughters at a family retreat meant to allow couples to deepen their connection.

The discussion will be moderated by Lynn Deutscher Kobayashi with panelists, sansei, Kerri  Sakamoto  and yonsei, Lara Okihiro and Kristofer Sakamoto-Marshall.
