This marks the first public opportunity to purchase the book, which was created through an intergenerational community collaboration and funded by the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society. While designed for children aged three and up, the book has also been warmly received by adults as an accessible entry point into Japanese Canadian history, people, and stories.

The Tribute Game honours the late Roger Obata, founding president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC), who first showed leadership in Prince Rupert, BC when his junior JC basketball team challenged a senior Indigenous team in the area in the early 1930s. He went on to serve Japanese Canadians in multiple roles, as president of the UBC Japanese Students Club and as founding president of the NAJC.

When we held the inaugural Roger Obata Tribute Basketball Game last November 2023 we were nervous about how this unique event would be received. We were thrilled by its success in attracting a broad range of ages, families and interests. There was no doubt that a 2024 event would take place. Led by Kristofer Sakamoto-Marshall and the Next Generation team this fun, friendship-friendly and family friendly day combines athletics, art, history, food, and another step in our relationship and outreach to First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities.

Named to honour Roger Obata, the founding president of the NJCCA-NAJC in year two we remember Hide Hyodo Shimizu, lifetime activist and former Toronto NAJC member. On event day we will read the tribute to Hide read by Roger Obata at the celebration of life held for her in 1999.

In the 1930s Obata organized a game between Japanese Canadians and an Indigenous team in Prince Rupert, B.C. He continued his love of the sport at U.B.C. where he completed his engineering degree. Thomas Shoyama first encountered Obata when he happened upon a game at U.B.C. where Obata’s opponents were a foot taller than him. Leading Shoyama to muse in hindsight, that it characterized determination which translate into his leadership as founding president of the NJCCA/NAJC.

Building Intergenerational Wellness: Reflections On Our Two Events

Earlier this year, the Toronto chapter of the NAJC hosted two intergenerational wellness retreats that brought community members together across generations. These events created space for healing, connection, and reflection—grounded in the lived experiences of Japanese Canadians.

Retreat #1: Intergenerational Strength as a Pillar of Health

Date: Sunday, February 2, 2025
Location: Centre for Social Innovation, Toronto

Highlights

Keynote: Pauline Kajiura (sansei, daughter of survivor Ben Kajiura) spoke about antiracism, social location, and the impacts of intergenerational trauma.
Panel Discussion: Ron Shimizu, Sharon Yamashita, and Kristofer Sakamoto-Marshall shared personal and community perspectives.
Breakout Circles: Participants discussed identity, racism, and family silence around incarceration and relocation.

Themes That Emerged

Intergenerational Trauma: Feelings of anger, grief, and shame being passed down.
Silence & Storytelling: Many noted that family histories were rarely discussed—sharing stories across generations was seen as critical for healing.
Community Connection: Belonging to the JC community helped participants develop a more stable sense of identity.
Solidarity: Linking Japanese Canadian histories with broader social justice movements was seen as essential.
The Future of JC Identity: Mixed-generation participants expressed both concern about “erosion” and excitement for a more diverse community.

Participant Feedback

Surveys showed participants valued:

The keynote and panel, described as engaging and thought-provoking.
Breakout sessions for encouraging personal sharing (though many wished they were longer).
Venue, food, and comfort, consistently rated “excellent” or “very good.”

“Connecting discussions about social justice to a JC context—being able to engage from a place grounded in my own community is a wonderful thing.”

“Hearing from other generations reinforced a feeling of connection within the JC community.”

Retreat #2: Deepening the Journey Through Film and Dialogue

Highlights

Film Screening: A Sorry State (2013) by Mitch Miyagawa, followed by a director Q&A.
Movement Break: Kunji Ikeda led mindfulness and movement activities.
Wellness Session: Mitch introduced the “ancesTREE” exercise to spark reflection.
Sharing Circles: Participants responded to two guiding questions:
1. “What came up for you during the film?”
2. “What are you celebrating/mourning?”
Dinner Reception: Catered by Ginko Japanese Restaurant and Uncle Tetsu’s, with space for informal conversation and connection.

Themes That Emerged

Intergenerational Trauma: Re-surfacing of grief, shame, and silence in families.
Loss: Cultural connections, language, family stories, and older generations.
Solidarity: Learning from apologies to other communities reinforced that Japanese Canadians are not alone.
Place & Memory: Reflections on visits to camps, ancestral homes, and Japan.
Hope: Younger generations’ continued interest in JC identity and culture brought encouragement.

An Invitation to Japanese Canadians from New Westminster

If you are a Japanese Canadian who lived in New Westminster, including the Queensborough and Sapperton neighbourhoods, or a Japanese Canadian descendant whose family members lived, studied, or did business in the New Westminster area, we would love to hear from you.

We are hoping to learn your stories, and about any information, documents, photographs, or artefacts you have as we work to recover a fuller understanding of the significant and unique Japanese Canadian New Westminster community that existed before the Second World War.

Our project

Preliminary research shows the New Westminster Japanese Canadian community grew steadily from the late 19th century onward until the people were forcibly uprooted in 1942, the community erased, and their history nearly lost. But, beyond listings in local directories, we have little information about this thriving Japanese Canadian community.

With the support of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society (JCLS), the City of New Westminster Museum and Archives seeks to source, collect, and analyze information about New Westminster’s historic Japanese Canadian community. Our aim is to learn more about the formation and development of this community, and to ensure that this history and the legacy of Japanese Canadians in New Westminster is remembered and understood for years to come.

Particularly focusing on the development of this community prior to the Second World War, through this project, we hope to identify Japanese Canadian residents of the city and Japanese Canadian social or political organisations, as well as key figures within them. We also endeavour to better understand the lived experiences of Japanese Canadian community members, so we can document and present their stories as we work towards restoring this history.

This research will eventually contribute to incorporating educational and commemorative information at significant sites in the community, as well as to possibly creating exhibits and websites that aim to reclaim, honour, and preserve the history of Japanese Canadians in the New Westminster area. Our hope is that the research will also contribute to educating future generations about the community’s contributions, resilience, and legacy.

Japanese Canadians to Rally Around Setsuko Thurlow at Toronto City Hall (Wed. Aug. 6)

All eyes turn to the Hiroshima Nagasaki Day Coalition’s commemoration on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Toronto City Hall’s Peace Garden. Now 93, Setsuko Thurlow has faced health challenges—powerful reminders of how precious and urgent each opportunity to stand with her truly is. This year’s event marks not only the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings, but the rare chance to hear from Setsuko in person. Were she able to travel, she would have been welcomed as an honoured guest in Hiroshima. With family-friendly programming, musical performances, and a moving lantern ceremony, the day will honour the past while strengthening a growing network of peacebuilders across generations.

Complementing the commemorations and screenings, the J apan Foundation, Toronto is exhibiting the complete Hiroshima Appeals poster series—28 striking works by leading Japanese designers created annually since 1983 to promote peace and remembrance. The exhibit runs until December 20, 2025. Setsuko’s story, once known mostly in activist circles, has become a touchstone of intergenerational connection and community action. At 93, her voice remains as urgent and inspiring as ever. For Japanese Canadians and all who care about peace, justice, and memory, this is a moment not to miss.

Across the country, communities are mobilizing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings through screenings, exhibitions, and peace-focused events. In Victoria, the Human Rights Committee of the Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society is co-sponsoring The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Poster Exhibition: 80 Years After the Atomic Bombings in Japan, running July 29 to August 15 at the Central Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library. A family-friendly event on August 2 will feature opening remarks by Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto and Colwood Mayor Doug Kobayashi, who will share his mother’s experience as a Hiroshima survivor. Setsuko Thurlow’s Legacy

A Voice the World Heard—Now Echoing at Home
In the lead-up to this historic milestone, Japanese Canadian communities have come together to honour Setsuko Thurlow, C.M.—a living witness to the horrors of Hiroshima and a lifelong advocate for nuclear disarmament. For decades, her message reached audiences worldwide, yet her remarkable contributions were less known within Canada. While she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto in 2019, her activist legacy remained largely unrecognized, even among Japanese Canadians. That is now changing.

The Vow From Hiroshima Sparks National Engagement Since the release of The Vow From Hiroshima in 2020, directed by Susan Strickler and Mitchie Takeuchi, support for Setsuko has grown across Canada. Despite launching during the pandemic, the film reached wide audiences through virtual screenings. In 2022, the Toronto NAJC and NAJC Human Rights Committee hosted a national screening for International Women’s Week, featuring a Q&A with Setsuko and a drop-in by the director. That same spring, she spoke at Toronto Metropolitan University for Asian Heritage Month.

National Recognition and Community Momentum Toronto NAJC built on this momentum by leading a successful campaign to nominate Setsuko for the 2024 NAJC Dr. Gordon Hirabayashi Human Rights Award. The effort brought together Japanese Social Services, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, the Hiroshima Prefectural Association, University of Toronto, Hiroshima Nagasaki Day Coalition, and the Ontario Hiroshima Kenjinkai. Setsuko was named the 2024 recipient, with the award announced at the NAJC Conference in Edmonton.

Recent Screenings Draw Large Audiences This summer, interest continues to grow. On June 24, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre hosted the first in-person Canadian screening of the director’s cut, followed by a Q&A with Setsuko, and the directors with Mary Ito. In early July, more than 300 people attended a Hamilton screening co-organized by the NAJC and local partners, alongside a simultaneous virtual screening in Vancouver. Additional events are planned in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Vancouver, and Victoria.

Transcending: The Wat Misaka Story

Did you know the first player to break the NBA’s colour barrier was a Japanese American Nisei named Wat Misaka?

Transcending: The Wat Misaka Story follows Misaka’s extraordinary journey, beginning in Ogden, Utah’s immigrant enclave and continuing through his service in the U.S. Army during WWII. He went on to lead the University of Utah to both NCAA and NIT championships before making history in 1947 as the first non-white player to suit up for the New York Knicks. Through candid interviews with Misaka, his teammates, and historians, the film reveals how his quiet determination shattered racial barriers in American sports.

The Toronto NAJC is pleased to screen “A Sorry State” directed by BC filmmaker, Mitch Miyagawa. Experience the power of community screenings, where shared viewing enables collective reflection and dialogue.

We gratefully acknowledge support from the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society that has made it possible for Mitch Miyagawa join us for the screening.

Mitch Miyagawa’s award-winning documentary, A Sorry State, explores government apologies for historical injustices, including the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War II. His father’s family was among those forcibly displaced, and their story forms a personal lens through which he examines state accountability and reconciliation. The film’s title reflects the complexity of these apologies—acknowledging harm while questioning their depth and impact.

Mitch is a multi-faceted facilitator, project lead, an creative whose work crosses many areas and fields, including health, education, arts & culture, and inclusion/diversity. His work is rooted in his beliefs in the power of respectful listening/ embodied connection, power sharing/ exchange, artistic expression/collaboration, the wisdom of the natural world, and the beauty, mystery, and energy of the human spirit.

His practice of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) models deep listening, respectful dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving, offering a playful, personal, and transformative process of mindful communication. Mentored into his role as an NVC Trainer over a decade ago, he has since led workshops and retreats across Western Canada and North America, guiding participants toward deeper connection and understanding.

Read Ann Sunahara’s 20th anniversary of redress speech

Observe UN Human Rights Day, December 10 with The Next Generation Youth Council. You are invited to a dynamic online conversation celebrating the values of justice, and community building that have shaped the Japanese Canadian experience.

Ann Gomer Sunahara, lawyer and author of the seminal work, The Politics of Racism will reflect on Japanese Canadian history and the law. She will be introduced by the Honourable Maryka Omatsu, former justice and the first female Canadian judge of East-Asian descent.

A quiz on Japanese Canadian history will be held, with many of the answers drawn from The Politics of Racism, available to read online here: https://japanesecanadianhistory.ca/

Next Generation – Youth Council members, Hana Hasegawa and Mari Galloway, a litigator will serve as MCs and moderators for the question period. Mari will also share insights into the
importance of legal support for the ongoing initiative to preserve the original Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre at 123 Wynford Drive.

Due to the healthy response, the event will be conducted webinar style in order to minimize distractions from our key note speaker. The webinar will be open at 6:55 PM with a pre-event video.

Join us on Sunday, November 3 to play, hang-out, check out our expanded marketplace and cheer on our 5-on-5 players. Last years event was a truly multi-generational mix of young folks, kids, parents, grandparents, and friends. There is something for everyone, and something for all ages.

Open gym time is scheduled so friends and family can have some fun on the NBA sized court. This year, we’ve booked the smaller court to provide more room for younger participants. Basketball skill-building and fun activities for youth, the young-at-heart and all ages will follow.

Jerseys will be available prior to November 3 for participants in the 5-on-5 game. Additional jerseys will be available for sale on event day but sizes may be limited. You must attend in person to purchase a jersey. These were extremely popular last year.
