If you are a Japanese Canadian who lived in New Westminster, including the Queensborough and Sapperton neighbourhoods, or a Japanese Canadian descendant whose family members lived, studied, or did business in the New Westminster area, we would love to hear from you.

We are hoping to learn your stories, and about any information, documents, photographs, or artefacts you have as we work to recover a fuller understanding of the significant and unique Japanese Canadian New Westminster community that existed before the Second World War.

Our project

Preliminary research shows the New Westminster Japanese Canadian community grew steadily from the late 19th century onward until the people were forcibly uprooted in 1942, the community erased, and their history nearly lost. But, beyond listings in local directories, we have little information about this thriving Japanese Canadian community.

With the support of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society (JCLS), the City of New Westminster Museum and Archives seeks to source, collect, and analyze information about New Westminster’s historic Japanese Canadian community. Our aim is to learn more about the formation and development of this community, and to ensure that this history and the legacy of Japanese Canadians in New Westminster is remembered and understood for years to come.

Particularly focusing on the development of this community prior to the Second World War, through this project, we hope to identify Japanese Canadian residents of the city and Japanese Canadian social or political organisations, as well as key figures within them. We also endeavour to better understand the lived experiences of Japanese Canadian community members, so we can document and present their stories as we work towards restoring this history.

This research will eventually contribute to incorporating educational and commemorative information at significant sites in the community, as well as to possibly creating exhibits and websites that aim to reclaim, honour, and preserve the history of Japanese Canadians in the New Westminster area. Our hope is that the research will also contribute to educating future generations about the community’s contributions, resilience, and legacy.

If you have information – perhaps personal accounts, family stories, stories about community life, documents, photographs, or artefacts – from before or after the internment that might help us shine a light on this underrepresented and nearly forgotten history in New Westminster, please contact Lara Okihiro (contact below). Lara is happy to discuss ways of sharing, which can include opportunities for interviews, to support this important project.

“Kokoro” (心) translates to “heart,” “mind,” or “spirit,” and represents the innermost feelings, emotions, and thoughts of a person. In Japanese culture, “kokoro” is often associated with sincerity, empathy, and the emotional aspect of human experience. Our hope is to evoke all the above and engage and connect as a community through film.

Experience the power of community screenings by viewing beloved and trailblazing films in the newly renovated auditorium at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Panel discussions will explore themes of identity and generational perspectives and follow classic films by nisei Jesse Nishihata; sansei, Michael Fukushima, Cindy Mochizuki, Linda Ohama, and Midi Onodera; and yonsei, Jeff Chiba-Stearns, Mitch Miyagawa and Randall Okita.

Tributes to creative giants Raymond Moriyama and Jesse Nishihata will include discussions of their legacy following the documentary, Magical Imperfection, and Nishihata’s award-winning The Inquiry Film and Watari Dori.

Ten years ago the Nikkei National Museum held a Nishihata tribute exhibit with two-person screenings of a selection of his films. Kokoro offers a rare opportunity to view his films as a community on a big screen with his son Junji, included in the discussion of his legacy.

Ugetsu Monogatari, by legendary Japanese filmmaker Kenji Mizoguchi, will be a final flourish. Hailed as “one of the most perfect movies in the history of Japanese cinema,”, this 1953 classic film was ahead of its time in focussing on the tragic effects of war on women.

Filmmakers, Fukushima, Ohama, Onodera and Okita, and Nishihata’s son Junji will be in attendance as presenters and panelists along with Kerri Sakamoto, Shin Imai and others.

Meet-and-greet networking events will take place at C5, the world-class lounge atop the ROM. An evening reception on Saturday, July 20 and a brunch on Sunday, July 21 will include a silent auction organized by Momiji’s Japonica team.

This initial ticket release if for a limited offering of one-day passes, which include screenings and reception or brunch and a two-day pass, which includes screenings and reception and brunch. All tickets include admission to the regular exhibits.

THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS & JAPANESE CANADIANS

Today, December 10, 2023, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is 75 years young (United Nations, 2023). Spiritual leaders, political theorists, and philosophers from Confucius (Sim, 2004) to John Locke have expounded on human rights, concepts of dignity, and respect for others through the ages. The consideration of how we treat our neighbors and how we wish to be treated is ever-present.

These efforts aside, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was a modern human rights milestone and a “defining feature of the twentieth century”. READ MORE . . .
